UGC is not a testimonial

UGC is not a testimonial

May 06, 2026•4 min read

User generated content gets sold as social proof, which is the wrong frame and leads businesses to buy it for the wrong reason.

A testimonial is somebody saying you were good. UGC is somebody talking about a problem in a way that happens to involve you. The second one works in a feed. The first one mostly does not.

What the format actually is

A creator films themselves, vertically, on a phone, talking to camera. It looks like a normal post rather than an advert, because it is shot the way normal posts are shot.

That is the entire mechanism. People have spent twenty years learning to ignore things that look like advertising. Something that looks like content gets watched, and a few seconds of being watched is worth more than a perfectly produced thirty second spot that gets scrolled past.

Why testimonial framing undermines it

The moment a video opens with “I had a great experience with” the viewer knows what it is and the filter goes up. You have paid for a skippable advert.

What works better is starting with the problem, not the praise. Somebody describing the thing they were worried about, the thing they did not know, or the mistake they nearly made. The business appears partway through as the resolution, if it appears explicitly at all.

This is uncomfortable for business owners because it means less time on you. It is also why it works.

What UGC is genuinely good for

Getting watched. Feeds favor video and movement stops thumbs. This is the main thing and it is worth being plain about.

Explaining something. Anything that takes two sentences to describe is better shown than written. Processes, comparisons, what goes wrong.

Being a format you can run repeatedly. The same creative wears out in four to six weeks on a small local audience. Video gives you something new to run that is not another photograph of the same van.

Looking like a business that exists in the world. A feed of static graphics looks like a template. A feed with people in it does not.

What it is not good for

Proving anything. A paid creator is not a customer. Treating their video as evidence is both misleading and ineffective, because viewers can tell.

Replacing reviews. Reviews are what people check before they call. UGC is what they see before they are looking for you. Different jobs, different moments, not substitutes.

Working without a campaign. A video sitting on your page reaches the people already following you. The value comes from putting spend behind it.

Fixing a bad offer. A well shot video about something nobody wants gets watched and ignored.

What it costs and what you get

Ours is $599 a month for three videos, $1,199 for six, $1,799 for nine. That works out at roughly $200 a video at every tier, so there is no volume discount and we say so rather than pretending there is.

It is a monthly subscription rather than a one off order, which we were not clear enough about until recently. Three new videos every month it runs, and you can change the tier or stop on fourteen days notice.

Most businesses start with three, run them for a month, then move up once they know which angle works. Nine videos a month is only sensible if you are putting real budget behind them, otherwise you have produced content nobody will see.

The honest comparison with doing it yourself

If you or somebody on your team is comfortable on camera, your own video will usually outperform a creator’s. You know the work, you know what customers actually ask, and the authenticity is free.

The reason most businesses do not is that it does not happen. The intention is there in January and there are four videos by December. Paying somebody is a way of making it happen on a schedule, which is most of what you are buying.

That is worth being clear about. You are buying consistency more than quality.

Where it sits against everything else

If you are not running ads, do not buy UGC. You have made content for an audience you do not have.

If you are running ads with static creative and the cost per lead has been climbing, UGC is one of the better things to try, because fatigue is the most likely cause and video is the strongest replacement.

If your offer is not working, this changes nothing. Better creative applied to an offer nobody wants reaches more people with something they do not want.
